No Hurricane Tomas

Tomas was suppose to be the most promising hurricane that was to hit Jamaica this season, but it didn't. We had received word from the mission office to announce in sacrament meeting to make sure the members were prepared with food, water and means of light. It was a good thing that it didn't hit the island because Jamaica was and is still recovering from the tropical storm Nicole that hit about a month ago. In fast and testimony meeting Sunday many expressed their gratefulness for the fact that the hurricane didn't hit Jamaica.

Missionary work is still going about the same. We are still trying to convince those that have so little about the blessings they would receive if they would pay their tithing. Some of these are members that have been in the church for about seven years. Church attendance is another problem due to lack of taxi fare to get to church. In the MoBay branch we have four members who are going to the temple and take out their endowments on the 23rd of this month. They are going to the temple in Panama. The church pays their fare and they pay for their hotel and expenses, but it still is quite a sacrifice for those that have so little. The members, that are going, are all single adults. As I have mentioned before there are hardly any family units in our branch. I think it is pretty much that way over the whole island.

Last Sunday we went to one of the member's home for dinner. Her name is Sister Christy. She also invited the sister missionaries and some other members of the branch. The meal was very good, the usual Jamaican menu consisting of fried chicken, rice & peas, greens, and bread fruit. After we finished eating we visited and sang Jamaican songs. These people really have a lot of rhythm and they are a lot of fun to be around.

Elder Sorensen has been working with a couple of our new male members teaching them about the priesthood, which they now hold, and other gospel doctrine. They come over to our house usually once a week in the evenings. They just love Fred and really look up to him. I'm attaching a picture of them studing.
