January Happenings

I just wanted to post a few things that took place in January. The first baptism, for the new year, was for a young man by the name of Johnnie. He was baptised on the 2nd of January 2011. He is from the Dominican and has been here in Jamaica for a few years. We really didn't have the opportunity to teach him but fellow shipped him at church. The missionary that was responsible for teaching and committing him to baptism was transferred the week before; so he asked Elder Sorensen to baptise him. He is a very humble young man and tries really hard to do what is right. We will continue to help him grow in the gospel.



On Saturday the 22nd of January we joined several of the senior couples and President & Sister Hendricks for a float trip down the Rio Grande river in Port Antonio. It was about a four hour drive from where we live so it took most of the day. I didn't get a picture of us on the raft, but just a picture of our raft captain guiding us down the river. It was a very beautiful and relaxing ride. The rafts are made out of bamboo. Each raft holds two people. About half way through the ride we stopped and had lunch. A Jamaican lady prepares the lunch right along the shore of the river. You order a head of time what you would like. We had the famous barbecue chicken with rice and peas and a spinach type vegetable. It was about a three and half hour ride down the river.



Wednesday the 26th we took the two missionary elders, Elder Randale and Elder Colucci, and one convert, Brother Williams to Falmouth to do a service project. We were helping one of the members who has really been struggling with activity and everything else. He lived in an area in Falmouth where they relocated everyone to redevelope, for the opening of the new pier. The houses were all very humble dwellings consisting of one room with board sides and tin roof. Right now Brother Lawrence is just living in a small tent until he can finish something for his family to live in. It will also be very humble as you can tell from the pictures below.
